The last time I sharpened my ace by moving the file towards the blade the way he does, I almost lost the tip of my thumb. I always sharpen by moving my hand AWAY and it's worked just fine all these years

“Away from the handle” pushes towards the handle.

20 years ago there was debate about whether a stone needs to be wet, oiled, or dry. Data then, and it seems now, indicates it doesn't really matter; just use what you already have. It will do.

Lay the axe flat.. fold a towel and place it in the middle.. lay your file on it.. fold the towel more or less until it meets your desired angle.. move the file side to side until your ready to flip.. repeat for all sides..
Its a super easy method to keep proper angle and even sharpening..

I use diesel fuel or kerosene when I use a puck

They look like the last two people I'd take advice from in regards to axes.

Don’t push your hand toward the edge, good way to get cut if you’re new to this and check the puck you buy if it’s an oil stone use oil if it’s a water stone soak it in water. Don’t do it dry

Use sandpaper on a drywall sander. The bottom of the drywall sander is slightly flexible and will conform to the edge, thus helps with holding an angle, and especially helps when the axe has a convex edge. In addition, those axe stone sharpeners are very low grit. Want a sharp axe? Sharpen all the way to 10, 000 grit wet/dry sandpaper.

Tbh it doesn't matter which way you sharpen it. Having the grain run toward to edge isn't going to hinder any kind of cutting.

I've no patience for that, belt sander. Its going to get dulled up in 30 mins anyway. Especially cutting oak or almond, hard wood, a concrete saw is easier.

Dry stone works, but not super well, itll get clogged with steel. Water works better than dry, but it dries quickly and doesnt do great with building that slurry of liquid and steel. Oil/kerosene/whatever you wanna use works the best. Thats the general consensus, with exceptions that im not going into right now, but thats the basic explanation

Austin had an axe. He worked in Canley with Rover Group. He was a toolmaker, and so he used to grind it up at work. 😊

It's always easier to really get in there when it's wet
