Webcams are, surprisingly, an area in the tech space that really doesn’t see much innovation. Most laptops (I’m especially looking at you, Apple!) have barely updated their built-in webcams in years, and the most popular 3rd party webcam out there still today is the
“old faithful” Logitech c920 - originally released sometime back near 2012!

With the massive leaps forward digital cameras have made in recent years - especially in smaller form-factors like smartphones - it’s no wonder most webcams pale in comparison with average quality, bad low light performance & autofocus - and terrible software without even basic controls!

Elgato’s newest release, the Elgato Facecam, promises to fix this. It’s not just an upgrade in the camera and lens, but an entire re-think of what a webcam should be - with a big focus on software to help get the most out of your device.

Elgato sent us out a free unit that we’ve been putting through its paces (as always, with absolutely no obligations, restrictions or even a promise to actually do a review!) to see how it stacks up against the competition like the Logitech C920, C922, and Logitech Brio.

I've watched at least 20 videos on the Elgato Facecam so far, and yours is easily the best one so far. Thank you especially for telling us the fixed focus range is 12 to 47 inches; that fact is important to my use case (which is different than most).

Every week we fill a room with 60 or so people to watch various presenters share their expertise, and we livestream their video, audio, and slides to YouTube. The room has challenging lighting, but when the wall behind the speaker is lit up by a projector, it makes lighting even worse, so it is REALLY important to us to have cameras that we can manually set, and then save the settings.

I have been using Sony cameras into an ATEM mini to stream, and it works great — except that the setup has just enough complexity that no one else will learn to set it up and operate it.

To create a simplified setup that anyone can set up and operate, I bought a lav mic that plugs into the laptop's TRRS input. We clip the mic to the speaker, and plug it into the laptop to replace its onboard mic, and it provides remarkably good audio for the internet audience. 

To capture video of the speaker's face and torso, I'm considering the Elgato Facecam on a skinny tripod. 

And now, thanks to you, I know that the tripod needs to be 12 to 47 inches away from the presenter's face. 🙂

Elgato webcam is by far the best and worth every penny. It is a plus it doesn't waste having a mic or 4K. Best to use USB mics and if you need beyond 1080 then best to get a DSLR or mirrorless and pay for a camlink

I bought the FaceCam but my computer is a couple years ole and doesn't have a USB3 port. Not one review I seen seen mentions that you can't use this camera with a regular USB port.

My C920 works great but needs decent lighting. I use a budget colour temperature / brightness control ring light which makes a huge difference to image quality. Cheap and effective.🤑

Hey guys what about the "Logitech Streamcam" webcam for live streaming and content creation, Vertical video in Full HD 1080p… it seems to be awesome but you have never mentioned it? Any info on it?

Just when I think someones convinced me that the Elgato Facecam is a genuine step up in quality from a logitech 922x pro stream, I see a side by side video that makes me think 'its no sharper/more natural' (even if brighter).

i have a question my content consists of building ho scale structures and i want to speed up certain parts
if i'm say weathering all the walls i don't want the viewer to have to sit through all of them just one wall and speed up the rest
and then on to the next clip.i hope i'm explaining it correctly.

I just got the Elgato, It's a major upgrade for me. I only have 2 videos so far as I am still learning to use it. But I like the 60fps. No one is is really using the 4K, so for my use case it's great. I know many Youtubers are putting their Cannons away and just using the Elgato because of its easy set up and high quality image. Just received mine today but it won't save the settings to the camera; go figure. It seems the BRAND NEW cord that comes with the Facecams suck. I just ordered a NEW cord for my NEW Elagato facecam.

Hmmm I think I'll look into it on my next paycheck my current one has a Ringlight and a built in mic but it was only like 40 bucks and sometimes the ringlight will like change mid recording
