I have seen a video describing that mercury is really not that deadly unless you inhale the fumes of burning mercury. It’s not even that deadly if you swallow some ..
when I was in high school in the 60s, in science class, while the teacher was away, one of my classmates put a vial of a mercury in his mouth, and moved his head side to side, so he would impress the class by having his cheeks bulge out from the mercury. He is still alive and doing well, I think he’s probably around 74 years old now…
but I needed to see this video because I have a set of four mercury, vacuum gauges for synchronizing four-cylinder motorcycle carburetors. When I attach them to my manifolds, after about two minutes, the columns on the gauges, which are about 30 inches high, they get water in the tubes above the mercury. I assume that’s condensation over the years, I’ve had these gauges since the 1970s.. I wanted to sync the carburetors on my motorcycle recently, and I doubt that I was getting accurate readings to balance the carburetors because of the water. I needed to watch this video to see how to clean the mercury and possibly separated from the water, and then return the mercury back into my carb sticks, mercury gauges. you can no longer get .. they are much better than analog vacuum gauges off today. The vacuum gauges of today flutter, and you can’t be sure if they are all giving the same readings unless you switch them on two different manifolds to see if they all give the same reading on the same manifold. You can reduce the flutter if you have in-line dampers, but it’s a pain in the ass. I like a mercury gaugeis much better since I was a motorcycle mechanic back in the 70s
By the way, I am going to wear latex gloves when handling the mercury
