Fun fact: that photo at 1:38 was taken by a man who was sent down with a camera on a wheel cart, he died even though he took the picture from out of the room and around the corner

It was not a cheap construction that caused the disaster, but many human errors and greed. Lead by a insane man, who didnt mind what others said. He wanted the safety test to be completed so he could climb up the promotion ladder. Also the staff operating the reactor was not trained to run a safety test. There was a shift change before the test was started.

"...uninhabitable for the next 20, 000 years." That is absolutely unimaginable.

Wow, only 2 minutes and 44 seconds yet the information in the video is extensive

What baffles me is that, according to the Wikipedia page, upon discovery of the Elephant's Foot, they had to use Armor Piercing AK-47 rounds to take a chunk because (remote controlled) drills could not penetrate the though surface.

... I wonder who came up with the idea of "Lets shoot an AK-47 at this dangerous radioactive mass!"

Morbidly fascinating topic, Chernobyl. I was three when it blew, making it the single most significant individual event in my lifetime. I'm glad the guy at the end of the said 'This is a reason when you don't build a nuclear reactor... as cheaply as you can.' I honestly think, as humanity's energy needs move beyond that which can be supplied by fossil fuels, Nuclear power will become a staple of energy production. Fortunately, our designs today (Gen IV SMR, or even the Thorium reactors the Chinese are working on) are infinitely safer then the RBMK or the BWR/PWR designs that resulted in the meltdowns at TMI, Chernobyl or Fukushima.

It's pretty fascinating that the immense temperature of the Elephant's Foot was self-sustaining due to the unstable nuclear isotopes still reacting inside of it.

Pripyat was not completely abandoned in 1986 for example the swimming pool was still in use until being abandoned in 1998.

Actually, the reactor level was abnormally high after they removed almost all of the control rods.

Have been there... The silence, was the most impressive thing... It was like entering a time capsule, we visited a little darming house, where all was left like in 1986... The skeleton of the horse in the stable... It's impresive.

The last photographs looks like one of the missions on call of duty modern warfare.

Do you just need to look at it on media or real life (I know it sounds stupid but I just want to know because I’m cautious)

I once shot the arm off a Russian Arms Dealer from that apartment building, after having to crawl through a field full of IFV's and infantry. My mate and I got pinned down near the Ferris Wheel, but we made it out. Damn Coriolis Effect, hard to anticipate.
