Thomas More Lord Chancellor Rise and Demise!

Thomas More Lord Chancellor was certainly a man for all seasons. His rise through the ranks to becoming Lord Chancellor of England in the time of Henry VIII is very impressive. Thomas even today remains a controversial character, we'll remember Sir Thomas More as a loving caring family man who educated his family to the highest levels.

The story of Thomas may leave you with a feeling of a Jekyll and Hyde styled man. Some call him a fool some say a fanatic. Yet as we scroll through his rich tapestry of life it starts to become clearer that More was actually a normal guy, but one who was brave enough to stand up and say what he believed, we can't argue with that.

Yet all his hard work would be undone by his inability to perform one simple task, which was to sign the Oath of Supremacy. Whether you think Thomas More was a sinner or a saint, this tale of intrigue will always have more questions than answers!

Love your channel! Thomas More was not only a brilliant statesman but an "everyman", with his love for his family, his wry sense of humor, his belief that women were every bit as worthy as men to be educated, and his deep faith, which he died for. The letters he wrote while imprisoned, which are available if you look for them online, are truly heartwrenching. What a monster Henry VIII was.

We studied history of Sir Thomas More at school. Later saw "A Man for All Seasons" play, loved it.

My English teacher in high school (in the 70s) had us watch A Man for All Seasons, a terrific movie. I'll have to watch it again to see how far it veers from recorded history.

My high school in the States was St. Thomas More High School … so of course I fall on the side who reveres him as a great man. Thanks for the video.

He had so much to gain in the world, but he wouldn't value any of it above his soul. As a Catholic, he couldn't agree that Henry VIII was head if the church in England. He is in Heaven now for it.

As part of my education, I was required to attend lectures at Thomas More College. As part of orientation we had several lectures regarding the college's namesake. Although a protestant I learned a fair bit about Thomas More. He was revered as a master educator, inspired advisor to King Henry and Faithful servant of God. All true, I suppose. With later readings, not solely from the Catholic perspective, he unfolded as all of the previous things but a fallible, flawed individual like all of us. I appreciate your very balanced report. He seems to me to have been misunderstood by many. Especially when seen through the eyes of Catholics versus Protestants.

Many who rose in Henry VIII's court ultimately perished, eg. Anne Boleyn, Thomas Cromwell etc.
Sir Thomas More was a TRULY CLASS ACT ... a great loss to the Nation.
He had his flaws, but definitely someone to have by your side as your RIGHT HAND MAN.

Fantastic video from beginning to end!.
The little reenactments were a special bonus.
Thomas More will always be my favorite historical figure to learn about.
I currently have his book ' Utopia ' and I look forward to reading it.
I commend him for not yielding to Henry's power hungry ego but at the same time I feel sad for his family for losing their beloved husband/father.
R.i.p Saint Thomas More 💕

More died in the name of religion as did so many men and women, he dispensed justice as he saw fit and did have so called heretics burnt and tortured, he was a man of his word and died with courage, and dignity, thank you as always John.

Great documentary video. Short, explicit, enough details but not too much, the story telling is fluent and words of explanations chosen carefully👍🏻. Thank you so much for this effort and excellent work!👏🏻

Very few Monarchs have the distinction of changing history as much as Henry VIII. I always wonder what would have king Arthur become? Fascinating look at Sir More and well done as per usual. Can't wait to see your next post.

Thomas More was/is very often misunderstood. He had a wicked sense of humour, people often had no idea if he is serious or joking. His correspondence with Erasmus was very often really juicy. He believed that law is for everyone even the king. H8 had a different opinion.

The king never raised a man, but he brought him down again, as I heard in a Tudors video speaking of Henry VIII. Surely, this was true of Thomas More.
Since his silence on a subject could be construed as acceptance of said subject, More died for nothing.

Apparently I'm related to this guy, our family has a document that is really old that has his name in the begining and end at my great grandma. My aunt has it framed

Let's not forget Thomas Moore tortured and burnt "heretics", so he wasn't so innocent.
