He joked about the worm but at one point in time, we did care. We can Google the Biology and characteristics of soooo many random bugs and little creatures. We only stopped caring because we learned everything worth learning.

As humans, we have studied everything, from plants, animals (worms included) and even the stars. Progress requires curiosity. The smartest people I ever met were also the most inquisitive people. I believe an intelligent species, would definitely want to study us.

That's exactly what we do as humans when we see a worm or any other creature, plant or anything else we get curious about. It's how we gain knowledge.
