As a section hiker, I routinely use a tarp and adhere to these practices when rain is a possibility; (1) don't camp on bare dirt - setup on leaves/grass/natural duff with good drainage (2) use an adequately sized tarp - for me that's 8'x10' at a minimum. (3) stake the sides and back down low or even touching the ground when rain is expected. Hope this helps.

I know it was a challenging day of hiking: waking up with a wet tarp and a muddy ground tarp, then having to persevere through darkness and more rain .8 from the shelter, but there were some real beautiful stretches on this section, especially the rhododendron groves near the creek. I know, it’s tough to savor those moments when you are battling with the elements but your positive mind set in the face of struggle is inspiring to witness. For what it’s worth, I’m adding this section of trail to Laurel Creek Shelter to my AT section hike bucket list along with the stunning descent into the NOC, and hiking out of Burke’s Garden hostel. All thanks to your excellent chronicling of this most inspiring CYTC adventure ❤️! Can’t wait to see what’s around the corner.

You were definitely flexing your grit today Stella. 💪 Good to see you eating a decent lunch. 🙂 Gotta keep that tank full to continue crushing the miles sustainably. I hope you get a sound, restorative sleep tonight. 🦆✌️

You are doing so great! It’s amazing that you’ve only had one night of bad weather for tarping. It seems the shelters are helping a lot with that. 🙌💪🥾

Always use a bath tub floor - zpacks sells couple of them which can be attached to the tarp which will keep your floor clean and protect you from splash. I always carry gloves as well to fold tarp and bathtub to keep hands clean.

doesn’t seem like a good choice of shelter, especially for a trail like the AT with regular downpouring rain and extreme seasonal bug pressure. to claim that the shelter “failed” is a stretch, it appears that this is just how this particular product holds up in a heavy rain, with splashing around the perimeter and dirt/mud blowing in at the unprotected sides. they sell an optional bathtub floor groundsheet for this very reason. perfect example of a stupid-light gear choice, sacrificing protection from the elements for some ounces.

for context, i have used square tarps as my shelter for over 5, 000 miles of thru hiking. i really enjoy tarp camping and understand the pros and cons and why tarps are an extremely rare choice for thru hikers. a square tarp is much more versatile than a product like this, which is really just a tent without inner bug-mesh or a floor. that being said, i would absolutely never use this particular product on any trail, especially on the AT.

What would happen if you stopped using your alarm for a while? Would your body find its natural rythym and would your daily mileage change?

Consider lowering your poles some on rainy nights under the tarp. @ShininRock has some great tips here in the comments section. Go, Stella!! 🚶🏽‍♀️‍➡️

Hey Stella, my name's Preacher. I followed you on your 2023 AT thru. I have a very random question that you have no doubt gotten before, but I never saw the answer. What became of Tally? Did you ever reconnect with him after the trail? He kind of captured my heart and I was just wondering. Best of luck on your CYTC. Stay safe and God bless.

Is there a reason why you like your tarp over a tent?
