I'm Hungarian so this story comes up at least once a year in some magazine. There are theories that the accusations weren't true or at least exaggerated because she was a rich widow and some nobleman wanted her lands, but it's hard to tell after all this time.

Erzsébet Báthory was actually considered to be a real beauty of her time. Also part of the reason why she got the title as a vampire was that according to legend she found the blood that touched her skin made it seem more youthful and beautiful. The story goes that she hit a young girl and her blood fell on Erzsébet's hand, and she thought the blood made her skin more youthful etc. Yes it's a myth she bathed in blood she never did, and there is also theories going around that she may not have actually done all those things she was accused of. Also on top of that there are theories about her possibly having porphyria (Which if you search that, it's extremely plausible). Also I loved this tutorial, thank you for publishing it.

There are so many theories and speculations about Countess Bathory: *sigh* I wish we knew the truth. Was she largely a victim of a male dominated political system? How much of her story was conspired by greedy nobles who wanted her wealth? That she was cruel is likely a fact, but that was not unusual in her day. Nobility fully believed they were special and chosen, while servants and peasants were absolute dirt to be used and abused as the upper classed liked. Seems unfair that others "got away" with it simply because they were not female.
Btw, there's lots of fiction inspired by the Countess, but "Sanguinarius", by Ray Russell, is a pretty neat short story if you feel like creepy literature.

It has been suggested that the charges against her were trumped up because the king owed her a LOT of money, which he conveniently did not have to repay after she was bricked up.

This is amazing! My suggestions are Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton and Elizabeth I.

Great idea! Bathory is such a fascinating person, even though all the stories are not true. I like the movie too (with Julie Delpy).

I love that this series is both entertaining and educational. I suggest the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. She is supposed to have been very beautiful. Even her name means: "a beautiful woman has come"

This is pretty amazing that you actually chose someone like Elizabeth Bathory to highlight. Like others have said she was actually considered to be quite beautiful during her lifetime. As to whether she committed the atrocities she was accused of I think she was very sadistic with her servants and was also a sexual sadist but as to the bathing in blood I believe that is fiction. I've seen the movie that was made about her, very well done but probably hopelessly inaccurate.
