Hiking an Active Volcano in GUATEMALA

Hiking Acatenango is probably one of the most popular hikes in Central America and I'm not surprised. It takes you 3500 m above sea level and gives you insane views of an active volcano erupting every 5 to 10 minutes. Some people consider this the hardest hike of their life but I think that's mostly caused by the fast change of elevation. Antigua is at 1600 m, you start at 2500 m and hike to 3500 m within few hours and the hike in the beginning really isn't easy. It gets much better later on but by that time your head is already spinning. That's why a lot of people couldn't summit Acatenango.
Some people go hiking Acatenango solo which must be great, but if you're not experienced I wouldn't recommend it. Also Fuego volcano that is right next to Acatenango is very active and if you go to the ridge of Fuego to get a closer look you can't go too close. It might spit up some lava at you because the strength of eruptions is changing all the time.
If you're not experienced you should take a trip with some company, we used OX Expeditions and they were great. Our group was small, just 15 people which was really nice. Some groups can be up to 40 people, so I feel pretty lucky ours was not that big.
