The Universe of 3D Cellular Automata

Combining 3D cellular automata with 3D printing allows one to crystallize some of the beautiful forms that can be grown using simple rules. This is a great way for designers to produce artistic forms with novel functions. 3D cellular automata can also be used to model a wide range of natural processes.
In cellular automata the states of cells change via local interactions. Conway's game of life is a famous example of a 2D cellular automaton. Wolfram discovered fascinating 1D cellular automata. Comparatively little research has been done on 3D cellular automata, partially because the forms are difficult to vizualize. I created these forms by evolving totalistic 3D cellular automata using mathematica code similar to the Wolfram demonstration below, and then isolating the largest connected component and 3D printing it.
