Hi, Thanks for featuring Inkscape. You can increase "rendering tile multiplier" in edit>preference>rendering. Increasing it to 20-25 will make the zoom smooth.

They need to set the dark theme as default. Seriously.

There are ways to improve performance a little, for example reducing the quality of rendered effects and blurs from the settings, and allocating more CPU cores to the application, but it doesn't make a huge difference.
The thing with the performance is that inkscape has no GPU acceleration at all. They said that it is apparently very hard to implement it and I'm eagerly awaiting the moment when it comes. That being said, it's not that bad at all, as weird as it sounds, you get used to the little lag when moving/zooming, and it's not bad at all if your file isn't heavy. Using high-resolution raster images can be a big laggy, but it's not that bad if you just link them (not embed them in the SVG).
Thanks for the informative video. I've migrated to inkscape a few months ago, and aside from a few things I'm missing from Illustrator, I love it.

Inkscape isn't even to v 1 yet? I started using it like...10 years ago (obviously not lately). Glad to hear actual news about it at long last.

Inkscape was initially released in November of 2003. Nice to see after 16 years that we are finally (almost) at version *ONE!* LOL! (Still a powerful program though)

My production is done almost exclusively in Inkscape, with some bits in Affinity Designer and fewer things in Illustrator. ILLUSTRATOR is a pain in the ass when it comes to node editing...you have to switch tools for every single action (insert node, delete node, change the node type, grab handles and many others)...selecting objects is another nightmare: try to select an anchor point that shares the same location with another one and you will understand what I'm talking. in the end of the day, you've accomplished half of what you planned and got really angry.
Affinity DESIGNER is easier in such tasks, but act odly in some scenarios, like when you change the node style; despite its GPU rendering, it gets really slow when you start to add more objects on the stage, getting stuck and laggy in the navigation.
INKSCAPE have the most intuitive way of thinking of the node and object editing....it feels way more confortable to illustrate in Inkscape. With a ovehaul in the performance and a little refinement in the interface, it will grow to a position where it should be already.

Thanks for the heads up. I have to use Illustrator at work (we have a site licence for all adobe products) and I also insist I have access to Inkscape. It does some things that Illustrator doesn't do (it also does some things it shouldn't do...)

My main gripe is that once my file size gets above 20Mb or so that's when Illustrator's rock solid performance takes over. 50 mb and upwards - Illustrator is the way to do things. However - small quick tasks are fine in Inkscape. I haven't upgraded in a while but it always puzzles me that Inkscape SVG won't open in illustrator so I always export my files as pdf or illustrator files. I rarely save in Inkscape format.

i'm using linux on my laptop, in inkscape 0.92, zooming is choppy but scrolling works just fine with the car.svg

I am a huge advocat for open source software. But Inkscape just isn't there yet (at least for me). Had to use it in a professional environment and after a lot of frustration we ended up buying a licence for a commercial solution. It might work for small graphics or logos and such. But if you want to use anything with precision (eg. guides), forget about it. Performance was okay, though (Debian).

I have to say, on ubuntu 20.04 using the candidate snap for this, the car.svg doesnt lag or smeer at all when dragging the view around like this. zooming is choppy but workable.

Please let us know when they fix the performance problem in Inkscape!

Be careful if you find you need a plugin to achieve what you need with InkScape. The 1.0 branch has removed certain support libraries that allow plugins built for 0.9x to work correctly. I assume once they finally get 1.0 out as their main version things will improve, but we've been waiting so long that even when 1.0 launches it might be better sticking with 0.9x for a while.

I have nice performance running Inkscape v0.92. on Linux. Tested with car.svg you provided.

I did not know that this latest version is available until I saw it on your channel. Thanks for sharing this and the review was very helpful.

It's great for an OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE but you are right the PERFORMANCE really need to be already better as it was in 0.92 version but still more improvement to come.👍

What I found surprising about Inkscape is that it is much more intuitive compared to illustrator. It is so much easier to work with now that I have been using it for a few weeks. I think Adobe products have a tendency to be over-engineered for no good reason.

I noticed that in affinity the technique they use to quickly render the svg on screen is to pre render it to raster and then first show the raster image when you zoom until the new res loads.
Someone with some Dev knowledge should implement it in inkscape and I bet it will improve performance incredibly

2:43 Panning is perfectly smooth for me on Debian Unstable under KDE. No judderiness at all.

Inkscape is actually pretty good once you get used to it. You can easily install thrmes and thus get dark mode. The UI may look a bit dated, just get a new theme.
