Ingredients for the dough:
2 cups warm water
1 teaspoon sugar
A pinch of salt
1 packet instant yeast
3 cups flour (adjustable based on the type of flour; add a few more spoons if needed; the consistency should be thicker than cake batter)
For the syrup:
1.5 cups water
2 cups sugar
A small slice of lemon
Instructions:
First, prepare the syrup. In a pot, combine sugar, water, and lemon. Boil for 6-7 minutes after it starts boiling, then turn off the heat. The syrup should be cold!
In a mixing bowl, combine flour, yeast, water, salt, and sugar using a wooden spoon or mixer. The dough should be thick enough to be spoon-mixed like cake batter. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 40 minutes.
Transfer the leavened dough to a piping bag and squeeze small balls into hot oil. Use scissors for easier handling. Once they turn golden brown, set the fried dough balls aside. For extra crispiness, you can fry them a second time; that's what I did.
After the first frying, toss them back into the hot oil for a second round. This gives you crispy dumplings. Put the double-fried dumplings into the cold syrup we prepared earlier, stirring for about 2 minutes, then transfer them to a serving plate. If you want a chocolate twist, you can serve them by pouring melted chocolate directly over the fried dumplings. Enjoy!
