In the 2nd memory in the Five Nights at Freddy's fan game The Joy of Creation: Story Mode, we play as Scott Cawthon's wife. You are trapped in the living room and must hide as animatronics enter the room to look for you. Ignited Bonnie, Freddy, Foxy, and Chica hunt you down all night, but how exactly does this area work? What can we find out of bounds and by sequence breaking things? Let's find out!

The freddy mask and foxy hook hybrid out of bounds is actually used for a secret cutscene you can get in game at this level (I believe you get it by dying to Ignited Chica at 5AM though I could be wrong), the cutscene has the camera inside the freddy mask while it walks down Bonnie's hallway, and when it reaches the door it stops and slams it's hook onto the door while flashing text is shown. Also the animatronic itself is a technical foreshadowing for Creation himself, the texture of the freddy mask and the three limbed hook arm adds to this

Its actually pretty smart to make things as minimal as possible in this as the performance boost was probably a lot larger than if they had done things like fully sculpted models for the entire hallway, did not unload characters, etc. In the end the player would have no way to see these things without noclipping the map anyways so props to Nikson.

I think the reason why you can block freddy or foxy from moving is because you also have collision, and when you stop an animatronic with the tv, an invisible wall gets placed so they stop.

wait, so if the animatronics jumpscare zone is the entire map, are there certain objects/areas you have to touch in order for the game to consider you hidden from the animatronic? also it would be cool to see exactly where you can stand and be safe from the animatronics

Huh, that's interesting

I was under the impression that the camera POV's of freddy and foxy were just pre-rendered videos. They way they paused made it seem like a plausible option, considering that the entire frame completely freezes. Kinda surprised Nickson didn't go that route, would have been much simpler to implement, and all but the most attentive of replayers wouldn't have had the slightest clue it was happening.

3:33 Oddly enough, these are actually assets for a secret cutscene. I don't quite remember how you get it, but it shows the Creation monster (from the final level) shambling down that hallway from a first person POV, until they reach the door and slam their hook into it.

Man after seeing this, I want to rewatch Mark's play through it for like the 4th time. Such a cool game, Very loud, Nikson is really talented. Plus I'm pretty happy there's going to be a youtooz of Freddy. Might not get it but it's still cool to see. Plus, sure pop goes also.

The reason as to why the objects can be seen only during gameplay is due to Level Streaming, meaning they only render when necessary, in this case, when the freddy is moving in that place.

please take a look at "Iron Lung", one of the few recent games that I've experienced that makes you tense with dread, horror and fear, all without the need of constantly using jump scares.

Showing the jump scare animations from another angle really shows how stiffed they really are.

The camera and the graphics do most of the work.

This is a cool analysis of the game, I love your videos. My only wish is that you had explained how the AI searches for you! If it has a camera or if there are premarked "safezones" to where the animatronics stand.

The Hook and Mask are actually parts of the final boss; Creation. You can tell because the hook arm has 3 endoskeleton fore-arms like Creation does
