If this were my lathe, I definitely wouldn't intentionally severely decrease its life !

One of my professors tried this in the shop at my school on a supper expensive CNC lathe and he got in some trouble for it. I think it was louder then he thought it would be

I can't start to tell you how many times i needed a stud with a giant bulge in the middle. But luckily I always have my $50k Bridgeport handy. I've saved tens of dollars making one of these every six years.

Why is this amazing lol I saw this in 2009 with machines that could handle it.😂 that lathe shakes like a pensioner's wallet 😂

The chuck needs to come to an immediate stop so the weld can fuse properly so it won't be brittle.

Pretty sure that lathe isn't yours.

this is a good lesson on how determined these machines are to keep going. industrial machines shrug off metal just like that, and they don't care whether it's metal or your hand in there

I really wondered why he hammered that locking key. Then I saw what he did....

If you ever tried this at home, it's actually pretty difficult. You need EXTREMELY high RPMS to generate the friction required. The deflecting chuck is to be expected because the mating surfaces tend to walk on each other. You also need to Rapidly stop the machine from spinning to ensure a good weld. When the machine is deccelerating, you can give it one final push to improve weld adhesion . Also, I would recommend the use soft jaws to protect the chuck. Excessive heat can alter the hardness of the jaws and reduce the longevity of the machine. ❤👍
