Microscopic anatomy of the appendix

The vermiform appendix is a short extension from the first part of the large intestine. Does it have a useful function? Let's look at the microscopic anatomy and compare it to what we have seen in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract, and consider how its differences might relate to its functions. We can also think about how this anatomy can lead to appenicitis andwhat that means.

My son had an emergency appendectomy when he was only FIVE years old, and I've always wondered WHY this happened to him. It was more traumatizing for me, than him, because I didn't know if I would lose him. I'd like input as to how not having an appendix might affect his future health (increased risk of cancer, other diseases?) and are there supplements, such as probiotics, which might help him?
