Full area: 16 cm² (4×4)

Blank area upper left: half of 8 (4×2) = 4 cm²

Blank area lower right: half of 8 (2×4) = 4 cm²

Blank area lower left: half of 4 (2×2) = 2 cm²

Total shaded area: 16 - (4 + 4 + 2) = 16 - 10 = 6 cm²

Yeah, I don't know why did I choose a harder way.

I realised that the side of the original triangle above the green area has a length of 2√2 cm. Measured from there, the triangle's height is 3√2 cm, up to the upper right corner. Multiply those two values and divide them by 2 (as is the formula for the area of a triangle), and you get the answer: 6 cm².
