The Battle of Poltava was the decisive turning point in the Great Northern War and a monumental defeat for the Swedish Empire. Charles XII, who had been wounded in the foot before the battle, was unable to command his army directly. As a result, he delegated leadership to Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld. Peter the Great, once fearful of Charles, seized the opportunity to exploit the Swedish army’s weaknesses. Poor coordination, mismanagement of the cavalry, and a lack of artillery sealed Sweden’s fate.

The Swedish army suffered devastating losses—thousands were killed, and the remainder surrendered days later at Perevolochna. Charles XII, with a small group of followers, fled to the Ottoman Empire, where he remained in exile for several years.

Upon his return to Sweden in 1714, Charles sought to regain lost influence by launching an invasion of Norway, hoping to secure access to the North Sea for trade. However, during the siege of Fredriksten in 1718, he was shot in the head and killed. His death marked the effective end of the Swedish Empire’s era as a great power.

Despite Sweden’s defeat in the war, Charles XII was a far superior battlefield commander compared to Peter the Great. Before Poltava, he had won every engagement against Peter, including the decisive victory at Narva in 1700. However, while Charles relied on superior tactics and aggressive offensives, Peter adapted, modernized his army, and used attrition to ultimately outlast Sweden.
