I am atm a inquirer, soon to be catechumen, my situation is rare, has to do with my family. But my priest has acknowledged that I have picked up with the choir, that I pitch in since it is a very small parish choir. I told him I sing baritone, more middle/high baritone. And he wants me to sing tenor if possible, but the bass parts are high enough to mostly chant through for me. And one of the chanters in the choir said it is all fine and dandy for me to pitch in, and another said the choir director (Fr's daughter) is very strict over who/who is not in the choir, and so far I haven't been apprehended by Fr's daughter 🤣 Cannot wait to get more into this rich and beautiful tradition, when I get free time I'll watch the whole video. Found it on my main yt page, so it's working and gaining traction! God bless!

"Music is the form of communication closest to the soul". Do you happen to have a reference for that? Thanks.

Would the point on western music appealing to the flesh apply to western style polyphonic music in the orthodox church?

When you refer to western music? Are you referring to secular western music, Protestant Hymns, or Traditional Catholic Hymns? The reason why I ask is because I attend OCA or ROCOR parishes that maintain the Russian melodies. The contemporary Russian melodies are actually only from the 18th century however, I know they take the best verisons of Byzantine chant mixed with Western influence. I do like byzantine chant however, I do think the Russian melodies do best with English. In addition, I do think the American chanting style is getting more and more popular.
