The real reason everyone feared the Byzantine Empire

During their thousand year history the Byzantine Empire had many enemies and suffered defeat several times with the final and decisive loss at the hands of the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

However they were always feared for their use of Greek Fire.
It was said to have been a liquid substance that could be ignited on contact with water, burning with a very hot and intense green flame.
It was primarily used in naval warfare to great effect. The flames would burn on top of the water setting fire to and destroying enemy ships.

The recipe was a closely guarded secret by the Byzantines even keeping it from their allies. How to make it has long since been lost to time.

It is unclear when it was first used but the common opinion is that it was first used during the Arab siege of Constantinople in 674-678 AD. The Arabs suffered horrible losses and retreated, having lost much of their fleet due to the use of Greek fire.

Should we try and resurrect this lost technology?
