About Papillon (1973):
The autobiography of Henri Charriere, one of the few people to successfully escape from the notorious French penal colony of Devil's Island, served as the basis for Papillon. Steve McQueen plays the pugnacious Charriere (known as "Papillon," or "butterfly," because of a prominent tattoo), incarcerated--wrongly, he claims--for murdering a pimp. He saves the life of fellow convict Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman), a counterfeiter who will later show his gratitude by helping Charriere in his many escape attempts.

Directed By Franklin J. Schaffner
Starring Steve McQueen, Dustin Hoffman, Victor Jory

The actor playing the condemned man did an outstanding job. He exhibited sheer terror in the face of his imminent death.

The clip was completely ruined by the pop up adverts at the end.

What I remember about that scene that I was anticipating before I even hit play on this YT snippet, is the sudden and complete silence of the entire scene for a few seconds after the blade dropped. I saw it at a theatre the year it was released. Epic story, acting and directing.

I see these comments about the video and cut speed. May I remind everyone that this movie was made in 1973.. They didn't have the technology back then that we have now. They worked with what they had.. The movie turned out to be really good in my opinion..

Papillon is a great film Steve McQueen should have gotten a Oscar for his role as Papillon he was robb of it. Dustin Hoffman should have gotten Oscar best supporting actor for his role as Louis Dega. Good cast of character actors film Papillon should have gotten a Oscar for best film of 1973 and Oscar for best cinematography.

My parents took me with them to see this at a drive-in theater. I was 9. No babysitter was available! ... I'll never forget the scene where a prisoner was trying to escape and he was shot in the head, and of course this scene. Didn't have nightmares, and actually have had a fascination with the guillotine since. I put out a cool Halloween display every year, which includes a beheaded Marie Antoinette doll a friend made for me. I've wanted to make a mock guillotine to complete the "prop" :-) ...

Stop watching the special effects and rent this movie and watch it, or get it online for free. There is a story behind this movie and it will take 2 hours of your life to watch it. Put your phone down, turn off your laptop, and watch the movie. It is considered one of the greatest movies ever made and it stars Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman and a bunch of other well known actors of the day.

pause at 0:59 LOOOOL, he suddenly becomes about 20 years younger and turns to latex

I'm pretty sure the first angle of the blade dropping before it switches to the latex head was shot in reverse. If you watch it in slow motion the blade completely stops for about half a second or so 0:58 before cutting to the latex head getting decapitated

When this movie was released, it would be 4 years until the Last Guillotining, And more until it was outlawed.
