Have You Looked in the Wrong Place for Your Drawing Problems?

It's easy for the self-taught artist to jump to conclusions about their drawing difficulties that actually direct them away from the real issues they have. This leads to all sort of confusion and discouragement. But the good news is this is an issue that can be overcome.

I particularly like this particular expression of what -- for your subscribers -- is an oft-repeated mantra: it's not just looking back at our reference, but it's intentional looking. Looking meant to answer very pointed questions... What's the angle of the line, how far does it extend, what elements of what we've already drawn will help us judge these angles, arcs, heights, and lengths? There's always more packed into these lessons than first appears: we need to learn to listen to Stephen even MORE carefully than we have been doing!

So, from what i understood after i watched this whole playlist.. Here what i've just came out:

1) spend more time analyzing reference not just few seconds that u think u know it.. Analyze means the size of this shape compare to this shape, the height of this thing compares to this thing, etc..

2) think of negative spaces rather than the outline and you'll end up draw the thing you thought you wouldn't do!

3) think of the reference in terms of shapes, lines, surfaces, angles... This trick will help you focus on certain thing more instead of falling in the " yeah i know that thing 🤡 " trap!

4) try to make the first thing you drew as a guide to measures proportions, prespective, angles this helps where to put the next line

5) doing upside down drawing will prove that you don't lack of drawing skills but observational skill! I really impressed when i knew this information btw☝️🤓

You're right every time I don't look back at my reference, and basically just go "I'm pretty sure it's this", it never turns out.
I think I would like to start some observational drawing practice as a sort of meditative exercise, do you think something with dense geometry that I would have to work over all day and maybe the next would be better than a more simple subject. I normally draw figures, but I'm considering architecture after watching some of your videos, to try and hone that observational discipline.
