Concerning Algeria and France. Unlike other countries which were colonised by European powers and became 'colonies', Algeria was not regarded as a colony. It was actually regarded as an integral part of Metropolitan France, except of course that the Muslim inhabitants were not regarded as full French citizens. Independence was finally won at which time France destroyed everything they could and left Algeria in a very bad situation.
