The amateur footage got copyright claimed, so here it is again with the lesser quality from its appearance in an NBC news report!

You might be wondering “why is there fire coming out of the ships nose in the amateur footage?” Well when the ship exploded, the was a thing called the axil core door which is like a hallway. So the flames from the explosion went through the axil core door and due to the nose connected to it the flames came out in a spray like a hose

Did an essay in college about the rise and fall of zeppelins (my professor loved it BTW). Truly a tragic end to a beautiful behemoth.

Some shots are close enough that I wonder if they could be lined up as a stereoscopic pair (3D)?

During WW1, zepplins were bombing London and other English cities, weather permitting. The Germans were worried about two things: the escape of gas via leakage, and if the hydrogen could be ignited by enemy gunfire.

The first was solved by using cowgut, which reduced leakage, and the technique allowed for overlapping if the stretched gut to dry in such a way that stitching was unnecessary. Millions of cows were reserved for this in Germany, and they had to go on a sausage ration as a result, as the gut was used in sausage-making. True fact!

Second, the British looked for a way to bring down zepplins, as the ordinary .303 bullets fired from machine guns were ineffective. Such bullets would simply pass through, and the only danger to the zepplin would be leakage, and a sailor would simply seal any holes as soon as possible.

So incendiary bullets were invented. Put on machines to fire upwards, as aircraft then could not achieve the altitudes zepplins could, they would fly beneath and open fire, hoping that the incendiaries would ignite.the hydrogen. Only one zepplin was ever shot down, most of them were downed by adverse weather. So that failed.

The Hindenburg may well have been more technologically advanced in many ways, and ammunition tech as well, but there is no evidence that it was shot down. And as it had crossed Europe and the Atlantic, possibly in bad weather at times, the possibility of lightning strikes would definitely have been taken into account as causing an ignition.

Seeing the footage, and I am not an expert here, the way it went up, from the rear, I would suspect sabotage. A small bomb would do it. I know this theory has been posited in the past, and rejected, but I cannot see that this was an accident. The explosion was too sudden.

Maybe Hitler got it done for political purposes, to blame the US and guilt them from entering his planned war.

Well, there it is, for what it's worth.

This might be a dumb question to some people but I’m curious why does the Hindenburg have the Nazi symbol?
