"I don't exist if you don't look at me!" Holy crap, that is eerily accurate. It reminds me very much of Tom Rogan in the original IT novel. He beats Beverly whenever he feels like her attention isn't completely on him. If she forgets about him, even for a moment, he has to assert himself on her - physically. When she gets distracted by news from Derry, he's left feeling terrified. He feels like he doesn't exist, because in that moment, when she's remembering those childhood horrors, she isn't thinking about him at ALL. And that drives him literally insane.

Yep, that line about not existing if nobody looks at them is spot-on!

My dad taught me about people like that from a very early age. Best way to insult people with shock-value fashion (piercings, tattoos, partially shaved hair, bright hair, etc.) and being loud, is to simply not look at them and ignore them like their father no doubt ignored them.

He taught me people like that are incredibly insecure, and are not worthy of our interaction until they get their act together. Tough love, indeed. We now see the societal ramifications of what happens if you give them the attention they crave, and it's a mess.
