HI Amanda this is perfect timing - literally my first day of school next week (and I'm starting in a new school, second year of teaching English lit). I was just looking for ideas like this! One idea that I've done as a participant that I'd like to try with my students is getting them to order themselves in silence from youngest to oldest / most siblings to least siblings / height / eye colour. Thank you so much for the quality of your content and the charisma you project - they give me something to aspire to!

Great tips, thanks! I usually have them introduce themselves shortly, and then we play 1 truth 1 lie, where student would say two things, and the class should guess which fact about them was true, and which one was a lie. I teach music, so they usually talk in terms of playing an instrument, or doing other forms of art.

Hi Amanda. I teach music PreK - 8th grade. As an icebreaker I do a theater game called Name Pose. We make a circle and then each student will say their name and simultaneously strike a pose. In response the class will say the persons name and strike their pose. If a student is too shy or can't think of a pose, then they can clap their hands as they say their name. PreK has to practice the simultaneity, but this works for PreK-5 well. 6th -8th grade seem to self-conscious to participate so I'm going to try your ice breakers for middle schoolers.
