Jacob Zuma Disqualified from Election by South Africa's Apex Court | Vantage with Palki Sharma
South Africa's Apex Court, the Constitutional Court of South Africa, has disqualified former President Jacob Zuma from the May 29th Parliamentary Election. The top court upheld a law that states that anyone sentenced to more than 12 months in prison cannot contest in the election. Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2021 for contempt of court. He served less than 3 months in prison, and was then released on medical grounds. His remaining sentence was eventually pardoned. But South Africa's top court says this does not change the fact that Zuma received a 15-month sentence. The ruling is a blow to Zuma's new MK party, and a boon for the ruling ANC.
