The idea that osteoarthritis is caused by simple mechanical "wear and tear" is outdated. The current theory is that it is caused by a degradation of the joint due to a combination of non-mechanical factors such as inflammation and metabolism. See for example Abramoff & Caldera (2020) for more information about this.
