I'm not sure what experts you are referring to, but most historians and archaeologists in this field would tell you that there were well-established trade routes between the Middle/Near East and India from a fairly early date.

India used to honour foreigners who came to study medicine by carving out their statues in their temples... Remember in the 2nd century Indian universities were providing education with dormitories. Later Nalanda became the most advanced and state of the art University ever built.

FYI giraffes are not found in ONLY Southern Africa. These grassland animals are found in East, West, Central and South Africa. They have a very limited to almost no presence in North Africa.
