Replace the part that starts in minute 3 with a way simpler and cleaner version. Select all your bars, OBJECT > COMPOUND PATH > MAKE, select copy, convert to object, ungroup, select all characters OBJECT > COMPOUND PATH > MAKE. Place rectangles on top of copy, select both, PATHFINDER > INTERSECT. Done in 30 seconds what in the video takes 20 minutes.
