Already heard from Schoeller? I bet you have. They are one of the leading manufacturers for woven and knitted functional fabrics for clothing. especially known for their softshells. Some very function-specific brands like Acronym, Enfin Leve, Arys, Vollebak, UF Pro and others use their fabrics and technologies for techwear jackets, which include:
- Waterproof Breathable Membranes (Schoeller C Change)
- Softshells (Schoeller Dryskin, Schoeller WB-400)
- DWR (Durable Water Repellency) - Schoeller 3xdry, Schoeller ecorepel

At the Outdoor by ISPO 2019 fair in Munich I had the Chance to meet up with Dagmar from Schoeller, who was kind enough to answer some questions I always wanted to ask them to further understand how their fabrics work. Hope you learn something from this video as well.

She told me their plans to increase the sustainability in their fashion fabrics, most importantly in workwear clothing. And what fabrics they have available in their cosmopolitan range, which is their name for urban techwear - functional clothing used in the urban environment.

Very interesting!
I'm sort of torn on how much they focus on sustainability, since it does mean some performance sacrifices will have to be made.
But maybe what's good for the environment is better for humans in the immediate term aswell, since natural fabrics don't have the health concerns or risks that synthetics have.
With newer technology there is not just a greater risk of currently unknown health issues but also there are known issues like BPA/S with plastics. And for those it can be difficult/impossible for a customer to determine whether a particular product is affected or not. For example, when I bought Dryskin pants I could not find out whether Dryskin is BPA-free or not, and it's a question I still have.
I'm assuming the exposure through wearing is much lower than drinking from a plastic bottle containing BPA/S but I don't know.

I like how every webpage on Schoeller (c_change at least) is plastered with the “sustainability” word everywhere, yet there’s no page on how to wash it... it’s sort of a short term sustainability: it lasts until the maintenance time. I hope this 20 minutes long video interview gets to an explicit answer whether dwr treatment is applied or no, or something else basic like that.

So much info! Too bad that the sounds of environment were so loud - sometimes it was hard to hear what Dagmar was saying...

I read Schoeller 3XDry is a treatment. Is it a permanent treatment in the fabric or will it dissolve in a wash machine after a number of washes?

I'm from the US. I'd like to take a look at Schoeller rain jackets here. What would I be looking for? I'm not sure which manufacturer's use it?
