In my opinion, this is a vital skill for any puppy or dog to have. Not only is it for safety (stop them from eating things, or chasing things), but it also helps to build impulse control. And it's so versatile, to help with many different behavioral issues. ❤️

Another suggestion that I saw online for teaching a dog "leave it, " is to place an object on the floor, and if the dog walks up to the object, tell them, "Buttercup, leave it." They suggested starting off with objects that aren't likely to injur or prove exciting to the dog, and that most people won't mind parting with. This will vary depending on the dog and the person, but some examples of such objects are a plastic water bottle (ideally you would use one that can easily be purchased in packs at the grocery store or gas station, not one that you might use at the gym), an empty cereal box, or a paper bag.

As the dog begins to understand what "leave it" means, they suggested progressing to more valued items, or items that are more likely to be enticing to the dog. Again, this will vary depending on the dog and person, but some examples of such objects might be lunchboxes, children's toys, or even a water bottle that you might use at the gym.

I love these videos with Nadia. We will have a GSD in a couple weeks and this has really helped with figuring out our training routine with our new pupper. Thanks so much.

We did leave it on the floor by putting kibble down and using chicken for reward so our heeler got it pretty quick. Now from afar she'll leave things alone and comes to us looking for praise or reward.

Awww, my lab husky mix looks just like Nadia. Nice video. Concise and easy to follow. We’re about to practice this now.

I would recommend using a very hyped and untrained dog as an example so we can relate to that dog and know the pros and cons....

Once I have gone through the 9 phase 1 videos and have taught these commands. What is the next training you recommend for a family/protection shepherd dog? Phase 2 videos appear to be same commands, but different training tools. Suggestions on next videos I should watch? Thank you so much, these videos have been very helpful.

My Bouvier is funny, she won't take food on the ground or off a plate or out of a bowl unless I tell it's okay. She wouldn't even take food from my hand at 6 weeks old (when I got her) until I trained her to take food from my hand. Never trained her that way, she came like that.
So, I can leave my dinner on the coffee table and go into the kitchen to get something to drink, without worries that she might take the food off my plate.
Guess I would have to teach her to take it, before I could teach her to leave it. You got the best dog training videos on YouTube and probably anywhere else. But I think I will skip this video, because my Bouvier is different from most dogs, she trains herself to do things before I have a chance, and does it just how I would want her to do it.
She trained herself to be a personal protection dog. She will herd the percieved threat to a wall and hold them there until I say Eva Come. Smartest dog I have ever had, next to Winston a Giant Schnauzer I had when I was 19 (50 yrs ago).
