👁 About this video : In today's video we do our normal practicality test comparing my newly purchased Jeep Wrangler and our dad's Toyota 4Runner! We figured since we have two very similar SUV's now was a good time to put them head to head in a few tests and see the similarities and the differences! Being two of the only SUV's with a body on frame construction, these are two very capable vehicles. The 4runner is more "normal", it drives smoother and can tow more, it feels slightly more bulky in some aspects especially with the turning radius. The Wrangler is more of a transformer with being able to take the doors off, the roof and it has a tighter turning radius. It's designed more for offroad compared to the 4runner, but have very similar ground clearance. It is easier to mod the jeep for more hard core offroading than the 4runner so it really depends on what you want in an SUV. The 4runner will most likely be more reliable, my dad has almost 90K mines on his 2016, and so far the Jeep has been fine with just over 27k miles. I love both for what they have to offer, but I do like the ability to take the doors off, it's such a cool feeling!

I sold a Jeep to get a 4runner. The 4 runner is more practical overall and in 2017 the 4runner had more amenities and was comfortable. Obviously the new Wrangler is as comfortable. But a Jeep is a Jeep and nothing compares to that. Today most people who own Jeeps use them like cars. I ended up buying an older Jeep to use as a second vehicle around town.

I thought long and hard between the two when I bought two years ago. I really, really wanted a JKU at the time. However, I had a friend that was really pushing the 4Runner. The more I looked into the 4Runner, the more it started to grow on me. I still really wanted the JKU, I thought it was cooler, knew it was more capable off-road, and I liked the idea of removing the doors. I actually posted on Wrangler Forum to see if anybody had experience between the two, and I actually got a lot of replies saying that for my intended usage of mostly a DD and easier trails, the 4Runner would probably suit my needs better.

I'll also add here that I was looking to buy used, and my budget was 25k or under, so that narrowed down my choices of available examples.

Right around this time the JL came out, and I liked the changes in the JL so much it kind of ruined the JK for me. However I didn't have 45k to spend on a new JL. So, that pushed me toward the 4Runner, and I found a 2013 Trail with 79k miles on it for 50% of what the new JL would have cost me. Also, when thinking about it, I didn't have any issue buying a 79, 000 mile Toyota, even knowing I would put 20 to 25 thousand a year on it, but when I was looking at Jeeps I was limiting my searches for models under 40K miles, haha.

After owning the 4Runner for a few years, I still like the practicality of the vehicle, and it does suit my uses. However whenever I see a Jeep I always look at it with a twinge of envy, because I think they're much cooler. I also envy the available after market parts and the lower associated costs. I also fully realize that for technical off-roading, the Jeep is way more capable, and also that mods improve it at a higher rate than what they do on a 4Runner. ( example, 3 in of lift on a JL Rubicon lets you run 37's with no problems, three inches of lift on a 4Runner lets you run 33s with some trimming)

The one thing I truly dislike about the 4Runner is the drivetrain. They've been running this for 11 years in this generation, and five or six years in the previous generation. I get that it's reliable, but the power delivery is terrible, the engine is noisy, and to me the driving experience is poor because of the lack of low-end torque. For driving around town it's adequate, and off-road as well. But merging on the highway or climbing mountains or steep grades, it just feels very lacking.

If I keep it, I plan on keeping it for at least 10 years and bringing it to 300K miles, so the perceived reliability and longevity was a big selling point for me.

If anyone were to ask me about it as strictly and on road family car, I wouldn't recommend it. I would point people toward something more like a Highlander. Better on road performance, better tech, better mileage, better handling, and better interior.

I have a 4runner I bought new in 97, 200k and only replaced clutch (last week), ac compressor, struts and rear shocks. Engine purrs like a kitten.
Just purchased a 2020 4runner TRD off road for wife. It drives amazing! Can't wait to head to mountains next year!
I'm not confident Jeeps last as long and road noise everyday....

The 4runner, sequoia, and tundra are the only ones selling new today where the lift gate window goes down

Brian is right on the cross shopping. The 4 Runner and the Wrangler lead my list of vehicles to consider when it comes time for me to replace my FJ.

I was in the market and looked at both, it was the on road ride quality, quiet ride and manors that did it for me. I knew how much time I spend on the highway so the 4Runner for the win. The Wrangler if you don’t mind wind noise, loose steering, bumps through suspension...that’s why your dad owns the 4Runner...wise.🧐

I cross-shopped a wrangler with a 4Runner. I ended up going with the 4Runner.

There's nothing I'd rather drive than my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn for off roading, especially beach/dune wheelin, trails and just cruising around in the warmer months. Doors and top in the garage where they belong. NO OTHER vehicle can touch a Wrangler or pre Wrangler for that incredible open air, off road experience! But if I'm going to be taking the family on a long trip, there's nothing better than a 4Runner. Both vehicles last forever, well at least the 4.0L I6 engine does, can't say the same about everything else on a Jeep. Most everything else seems to just f n break! The TJ is a fun toy while the 4Runner is the real deal. I'll say this though, the Jeep TJ 4.0 I6 has amazing low end torque, it's outstanding and will always be my go to for off roading! The 4Runner is just better for a family.

Thank you for doing this practicality test. It’s honestly exciting to see all that cargo volume in both cars in action. It’s got me excited for future family trips to Ikea for furniture and Swedish Meatballs. Definitely got worried watching your adorable dog Nat running around freely on the grass while the Jeep Wrangler was testing the ground clearance, glad they were all okay!

The 4runner has more cargo room. Not a huge difference but the 4runner is def bigger inside.

Great video guys. I have a limited 5th gen 4Runner 4wd and my BIL has a Wrangler.

My limited 4Runner you can fold the seats down from the back (it has foldable rear seats so the seat system is different).

I was cross shopping with a Wrangler, and my BIL is considering getting a 4R to park next to his wrangler. Why? Rugged and durable vehicles with a respectable history. It’s comfort of mind knowing both these vehicles can take you and your family almost anywhere without a problem.

I love the Jeep better, but the 4 runner is nice too

Sold my 96’ 4Runner that ran smooth even at 236k miles.. miss it. I’m in the market and currently cross shopper the 4Runner and sheep. The 4Runner seems a bit more practical for the occasional weekender to off-roader

Typically the resale value on the 4runner is considerably higher. These beasts hold their value. The jeeps offer a whole lot of fun.

If you care about "serious" offroading, the 4Runner has a locking rear differential at a lower price point than the Wrangler. To get locking differentials on the Wrangler, you have to upgrade to the Rubicon which is considerably more expensive than the TRD 4Runner. Granted, it's one (rear) locking differential on the 4Runner TRD and two on the Jeep Rubicon, but the point still stands.

Manual 4wd shift is so much more assertive and enjoyable for me than electronic button shift. 4runner is more reliable jeep is more capable.

Off road handling… the Jeep is better because of its short wheelbase and front lockers. The 4Runner wins overall for being nearly as good off road as the Jeep, but also for being much better on the road, as well as much more reliable.

Wrangler. For 100% rock climbing and off road 4Runner 70% hi way 30% off-road
Both are iconic SUV . Buy both one for me one for your spouse

Owned a tj 4.0 dual tops. Now own a 4 runner. I realized I was too lazy to change tops, so it was a mute point from there. With the 4 runner I just push a few buttons and sunroof, windows and rear window comes down. A nice compromise for summer fun without bothering a friend to help me remove my hardtop.

Can’t decide what I really want, I’ve always had tjs but I love the reliability of the 4Runner. Great review.
