The Right Way to Elasticate a Fishing Whip

Here I show you the Right Way to Elasticate a Fishing Whip.

The fishing whip is a fantastic tool for beginners to take up fishing with. It's very light, there are no reels to worry about and they are really inexpensive too.

As standard a fishing whip is fitted with something called a flick tip which is simply a fixed eye at the end to tie on your fishing line, float and hook (your 'rig'). This is ok when fishing for small fish but hooking something bigger might get you into trouble.

Elasticating a whip has a couple of advantages of using a flick tip alone:
- You will hit more bites and hook more fish as you are less likely to 'bump' fish off on the strike (aka pulling the hook and bait out of the fishes mouth). This makes it much more enjoyable for beginners
- The elastic provides a cushion should you hook a bigger fish, and allows you to play the fish until it is tired.

Items you will need:

- A fishing whip with a hollow tip section
- Internal fitting ptfe pole bush
- 4-6 rating drennan aqua bungee elastic
- Dacron pole elastic connectors (smaller the better. I've used a large one in the video to make things clearer)

Tools required:
- Junior hacksaw
- Sharp scissors
- Tweezers/Crochet hook (if needed)

The biggest problem with elacticating a whip is that if you are fishing to hand and you hook a decent fish-usually a carp, it is difficult to land as you have too much line out and with the stretched elastic added you cant hold the whip high enough to net the fish, , I got over this by attaching a lencth of green garden wire to the bung and running it all the way to the bottom of the whip, so it could be used as a puller, allowing you to shorten the length of the elastic and able to net the fish--I have used this method very successfully for many years.

Hi I'm new to fishing and fancied the idea of a whip rod. However I've noticed after watching several videos that only small fish seem to be caught. Can I ask does adding the elastic increase the chances of catching larger fish.
Thank you Paul

Hey, my 8m fully telescopic whip just broke from about 1m away from the tip, so I decided to set up an system like this. How long rig are you using on that 4m pole? I imagine it's quite difficult to estimate how much the elastic stretches once you hook a fish and especially an bigger one. If you also cut the line rig too short the reach is kind of disappointing. I would really like to see you fish on a video with an setup like this. Cheers!

Excellent . I was given a whip the other day and it has a ring on end and as I’ve never used one before I was wondering how to elasticate it . Wasn’t sure if I could use it without elastic but now I know how to elasticate it . Would I have been able to use it without elastic ? Just by attaching line to ring at end .
