In this video I will show you four books that you can use to get started with mathematics. All of these books are different and are written with different audiences in mind. The books are Elementary Algebra by Sullivan, Struve, and Mazzarella, Intermediate Algebra by Leithold, Algebra and Trigonometry by Sullivan, and Basic Mathematics by Lang.

Both Sullivan and Stewart Precalculus actually do have some challenging exercises, even though most are just plug and chug or routine.

I got my minor in Mathematics in college, and I never felt like I really grasped some concepts super well, so these book reviews are super helpful! I want to strengthen my skills in math 😌

I don't know what it is about algebra & trig books but I have a special love for them because they teach the fundamentals which are vital in learning and understanding higher level math. Although I am now further along in my mathematical journey, I'm very fond of them and I still reference them when I wanna practice proving trig identities.

This is the kind of math book review I've been waiting for. I'm glad to see reviews of elementary and intermediate algebra books. I found that at least some study of those helped me immensely in my college algebra course at school, especially elementary algebra. I have the 9th edition of Sullivan's. I bought it for 7.09 U.S.D. and that too saved me from bad grades on my assignments! I'll look into getting that book from Lang. Thanks for this vid 🙂

Edit: It's Sullivan's Algebra and trig book that I bought, a used copy that helped get me through my math course.

I always enjoy your book reviews and frequently buy those recommended.

I love all these book commentary videos. The more the better. You could do more extended commentary for each book, just thoughts or impressions, I’ll never get bored.

2 I'd recommend for the UK viewers are engineering maths by either Bird or Stroud. They do the foundation stuff as well as more advanced such as Laplace etc depending on which you get. Only really the more advanced statistics they are missing out on.

Really good explanations, worked examples and answers

My copy of Basic Mathematics actually just came in today, fresh from Springer. I did a full calculus series in college 20 years ago, but time has not been kind to my math skills and they have fallen embarrassingly low. Am hoping to work through first this and then Langs "Short Calculus" to get back up to snuff!

The book titled “Precalculus Mathematics in a Nutshell” by Simmons is another excellent text for beginners

Math Sorcerer, one book I like is 'More Precisely - The math you need to do philosophy " by Eric Steinhart. Discusses ideas in a pretty lucid way.

time to start,
1- Basic Mathematics
2- Elementary Algebra

I would recommend the textbooks of Leonhard Euler, in particular his Analysis of the Infinite which was the first calculus textbook.
Reason 1: The style is lucid.
Reason 2: The notation is essentially free of subscripts, this is cumbersome to experts but for the student it is very powerful because it teaches efficient "internal bookkeeping."
Reason 3: It teaches research mindset. The material is often presented in the form of problems, Euler attacks these problems tirelessly, obtaining the most general solution to every problem given.
Conclusion: This combination of lucidity, flexibility of notation, problem solving, computational complexity in the sense of applying algebraic laws for dozens upon dozens of lines, working with many variables simultaneously, and obtaining the most general solution to the given problem, all of these components work together to give the student a remarkable mathematical education.

Edit: I should also recommend Euler's Algebra. I haven't studied this work but it is supposed to cover all of elementary algebra even covering topics like quadratic forms.

I haven't seen "Basic Mathematics" but from reading an old copy of single-variable calculus by Lang I can endorse any Lang book enthusiastically.

Absolutely amazing, intuitive way to get the concepts, rather than just rote-learn. So good.

I'd have included "Naive Set Theory" by Halmos as a foundation.

And I admit to being a fan of Stewart's Calculus texts, having been a student of Stewart while he was writing his first, involving his students plentifully in its development.

I had Linear Algebra 1-3 and Calculus 1-3 but a long time ago (+40 years). Surprising how much I have forgotten at those levels and lower.

Thank you for this review. I am re-learning math after many years away, so these reviews are helpful. I have the Lang book on my list, but I was lucky enough to find an older edition of the Sullivan book at a used book shop for $10! And it is spiral bound for easy maneuvering on my desk. Thank you so much for the recommendations!
