The Battle of Salamis in 480 BC was a crucial naval conflict during the Greco-Persian Wars. After the Persian King Xerxes invaded Greece and sacked Athens, the Greek city-states, led by Themistocles, made a strategic retreat to the narrow straits near the island of Salamis. Themistocles lured the much larger Persian fleet into the cramped waters, where their numbers became a disadvantage.
The smaller, more maneuverable Greek triremes launched a surprise attack, using the narrow space to outflank and ram the Persian ships. The Persian fleet, disorganized and unable to effectively deploy in the confined straits, suffered heavy losses. Xerxes, watching from a cliff, saw his navy crippled.
This decisive Greek victory marked a turning point in the war, forcing Xerxes to retreat and saving Greece from Persian domination. It also highlighted the importance of naval power and Greek unity in the face of a common enemy.
