For people wondering. To begin, it was 7, 000 men of a Greek coalition for the first few days. When Leonidas (leader of the coalition) learnt that the Persians discovered a pass in the mountains to encircle the Greeks, he sent everyone home except his 300. But 700 thespians refused to leave. So the last day of the battle it was 1, 000 Greeks.

Edit:

Forgot to mention, 400 Thebans also refused to leave so it was 1400.

This guy is a real historian. He got his degree watching the 300 movie trailer. If he had watched the movie, he would be a renowned expert on greco persian wars.

The Greeks had an army of 10, 000 strong but during a retreat they needed someone to hold the defensive line, 300 Spartans specifically handpicked by their king leonitus and 700 Thespians who refused to retreat stood their ground and defeated the Persians twice. A traitor told the persians of a secret pass and the Spartans and Thespians got trapped fighting to the last man, after leontius fell they pushed three times to recover his body until the last Spartans stood fighting with only their hands. delaying the Persians and saving Greece. The Athenians did a similar feat on the sea at the same time.

History might not be accurate but 300 still one of the most badass movies ever

The coolest thing about this is the fact that Leonidas at the time was approximately in his 60's. A 60 year old dude gave humanity one of its greatest examples of military courage

It wasn't just the 300 Spartans fighting against Xerxes. There were about 5000 soldiers there, they were still heavily outnumbered, but let's not act like it was 300 Spartans vs 100, 000 Persians

This might be the only time in history where the loser of the war was actually held in highest esteem than the winner

Spartans are like the epitome of what you think of when someone says “Bad Ass.” They were like a bunch of ancient Matt Damons.
