Learn about the difference between Explicit and Implicit DAX Measures:
1. (00:10) Introduction to Explicit and Implicit DAX Measures
2. (01:33) Create Implicit Measures and see these six problems: 1) Number Field will use SUM Function, 2) Text Field uses COUNT, 3) You can't add Number Formatting to the Measure, 4) You can't Reuse Formula, 5) You can't change the name of the Measure, 6) If you right-click an Implicit Measure in the Values Area of the PivotTable you can change the "Summarize Values By", but then it adds yet another Implicit Measure
3. (05:37) See how to show Implicit Measures in the Measure Grid.
4. (07:17) Create Explicit Measures and see these five reasons why we should use Measures: 1) You choose what functions go into your Measure, 2) You can name the Measure, 3) You can apply Number Formatting that will follow the Measure around when it is reused., 4) You can use the formula over and over., 5) You won't have a bunch of extra Measures created by right-click, "Summarize Values By".
5. (10:28) Summary

I tell people who are impressed with my Excel skills that the "secret" is subscribing to your terrific channel. I learn something new with each one.

By way the best video explaining Power Pivot, DAX, explicit and implicit measures. Understood a lot from so little words. That says a lot about you.

Good tip. Whenever in PBI or PowerPivot, I like to make measures for every single thing that might be a denominator or numerator. Total control of that name eliminates a lot of rework and confusion.

the Quick Calc options in Power BI are kind of like the best of both worlds. You can drag your field, drop it in and create new, reusable, and edit friendly (change number formatting, etc) measures right from the field name. There's 13 quick calc options right now. Also helpful if you're learning DAX because it will write the formula and show you.

Hello Mike, I've read the explanation in Rob Collie's book (PP & PBI) and it was not bad but yours topped it totally!! Plz don't tell him I said 8-)

Thanks Mike! At last I could forget such annoying thing as "field format"-> e.t.c. everytime than I want to rebuild my pivot table. Thanks_a_lot^10! ;)

Hi Mike. Thanks a lot for all your videos and tricks. All very useful!

 One question if I may.

I have a data model with data in the past (executed
hours) and in the future (planned hours) arranged in rows per week. Of course,
executed hours are blank for future dates. How can I enhance the DAX formulas
to ignore future dates and don’t show the executed-hours column in the future? That
would simplify the visual of the Pivot Table.

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

I guess this bears us the question of when (if any time) should we use implicit measures? Should MS have not created it in the first place since it has so many drawbacks?

Thank you very much Mike, as usual, extremely useful! ;-)

Do you remember in which video you show us how to create measure with stantard edition of Excel, without the Manage Data Model interface?

Hi,

Thank you for your very useful videos!

I have one suggestion - would it be possible for you to think of getting a better microphone? When it comes to the content I find the videos easy to follow but the sound quality is somewhat poor.

Otherwise great stuff! :)
