In the final leg of our search for Phylis Lewellen, missing since December 27, 1996, we comb through the final possible locations with renewed determination and a critical eye. Having covered countless miles of waterways and shores, our team turns our focus toward exploring the last remaining leads in the Long View area, hoping to bring Phylis’s family the closure they’ve sought for nearly three decades.

A MUST-HAVE Safety Tool for ALL Drivers.

Phylis Ellen Lewellen, a mother of two, disappeared under mysterious circumstances one cold night in 1996. Driving a Peugeot—a car she rarely used—and accompanied by a Rottweiler, she was last seen at a gas station around 10:22 p.m. Since then, theories have abounded about her intended route and why she chose a night marked by stormy conditions to make her journey. With few concrete clues, our team has systematically searched each location, attempting to retrace Phylis’s path and explore where an accident or other incident might have occurred.

COLD CASE: A Final Search for Phylis Lewellen After 27 Years

On this third day, our strategy centers around checking every viable boat ramp and road adjacent to the riverbanks. Knowing that certain areas along the Columbia and Cowlitz Rivers have been potential accident sites for years, we focus our sonar and scanning efforts on these specific locations. As the day begins, we review the route and head towards our first key area—local boat ramps and adjoining shorelines that may have concealed a vehicle for years.

Our sonar equipment is working double duty today, scanning depths of 5 to 20 feet along these river ramps. Our down imaging and side imaging sonar setups allow us to carefully scrutinize the riverbed. Scanning with 75 feet on either side, we keep a close eye on any shape that might match the Peugeot or give off a shadow indicating a man-made structure. Each possible target—a log, a shadow, a pile of debris—is analyzed in detail, with the team ensuring nothing is overlooked in this exhaustive effort.

One promising sonar target catches our eye near a submerged bridge structure. However, after further review, the shape turns out to be a cluster of tree branches—a heartbreaking but common occurrence in searches of this nature. Despite multiple close encounters with potential leads, each turns out to be debris or geological formations, not the vehicle we hope to find.

Other local ramps, including the beach drive-in spot and downtown ponds, are also on our list. Each ramp holds its own challenges, with variable depths and large rock formations obscuring the sonar readings. The team meticulously investigates each location, navigating submerged obstacles and ruling out potential spots one by one.

After three days of intense searching, Phylis’s whereabouts remain unknown. Our search team reflects on the exhaustive process, the hopeful leads that fizzled, and the difficulty of piecing together a 27-year-old mystery with limited clues. Despite the challenges, our resolve remains strong, knowing that every effort counts.

Join us on this journey of hope, tenacity, and commitment as we continue our mission to bring peace and closure to Phylis’s loved ones and countless other families who await answers.

No one is more thorough and determined than you, Jared, and your entire team. Equal parts doggedly determined and compassionate. This Canadian appreciates all of you.

Hi Jared, in late 1989 I followed my heart to Charleston, Oregon. As the relationship failed my depression became worse and I found a place I could drive my dad’s Ranchero to at the ocean’s edge. My thought was to be close enough as high tide came in and would wash me out into the ocean. I tried this twice then decided to drive back home to Nebraska. It may be that she will never be found. Keep trucking my friend. ❤

I'm so amazed like Byron said it's really shallow in a lot of those rivers. Her sister now knows with confidence where she is not and there is no question.

Regardless of the situation this man and her family deserved closure. We are all sinners and we can’t put each other in a heaven or a hell. Only God can judge. This man will hurt regardless because she still was his wife. May God rest her soul and condolences to this gentleman and family

I completely agree with that guy, I am amazed at how shallow these places are. Just take me with you because if I ever went in the water it would be at least 6ft or more, because my luck is horrible...😂

This Peugeot 504 reminds me of another missing person. A French celebrity, his name was Teddy Vrignault and he vanished in 1984 with the same Peugeot 504, the car was never found. I am now convinced that he must have had a similar accident. You should go to France and show them how to work.
