I have three, the last two were twins.There was no way we could afford daycare at $500.00 a week each, so I didn’t work much before they were all in school. Our home was Robo foreclosed on during the recession and we barely hung on to it. We’ve never been able to afford to buy healthcare at$1, 000.00-1, 700.00 a month. Our income was always a couple of thousand dollars over the 400% poverty level to get expanded Medicaid, and we spent about 50 percent of our net income on our house payment. We drive old cars, don’t take any family vacations. We couldn’t afford the “camps” or travel teams for our kids and didn’t qualify for low income after scoop programs. Our oldest went to community college as an honors student and had some scholarships available but they just weren’t enough not to have to take out student loans, so he is working full time taking the rest of his University classes very part time. I’m sure the twins will do the same.Do you see where I’m going with this? Who would choose it? If you are a young person with student loan debt, and can’t afford a home, or quality daycare and education, or health insurance, if you can’t be reasonably sure your work will provide income security, why would you do it? We need to start rewarding and supporting parenthood or the rapidly declining birthrate will just drive off a cliff. Get it?

Children cost a lot of money and are considered a burden. Housing costs are way too high along with everything else and well-paying jobs are hard to get so it's getting harder to support a family. People used to be able to find a good job right out of high-school supporting a family on a single income, now that is incredibly rare. Plus the cost of daycare is ridiculous. It's not enough to tell people to have kids, society has to be compatible for families. This isn't even including the state of the dating game. Nobody wants to settle with a perception of unlimited options on dating apps like Tinder. And there is an emphasis on short term fun and hook-up culture over having families.
