My Grandfather was part of the Canadian Army that helped liberate the Kingdom of the Netherlands during ww2. He had a grade 10 education but could speak 4 languages including Dutch. We played this anthem at his funeral. lang leve de koning! R.I.P Gramps 🇳🇱🇨🇦

I am Japanese. I remember Antonius Geesink from Dutch National Anthem. He was the first olympic champion of Judo open weight division in 1964. It means he was the strongest judo player in the world. So many Japanese judokas respect him !

My brother and I were hitch-hiking through the Netherlands (we wore our Scout rucksacks on which was the word Canada and our we came to a city centre where a great crowd was assembled without knowing that they were celebrating Dutch freedom from the we hiked crowd went suddenly silent and then parted to let us someone spotted our flags and the word Canada and the crowd went rushed toward us clapping and we were literally swept up by the crowd and propelled along as the centre of were hugged and kissed and welcomed by turned out that a Canadian regiment had freed the city during the war and everyone thought we were young soldier wearing Scout military pattern a reception we were

As a US Air Force officer while serving in Europe, my wife and I stood in the main square in Amsterdam as people gathered to celebrate Liberation Day. I remember the queen coming out of the her building and walking right past where I stood. She was followed by WWII veterans of the British and American armies who liberated the Netherlands. She gave a moving speech. But the thing I recall the most is the playing of the Dutch National Anthem. I was moved by its beauty. I turned to a stranger next to me who was Dutch and told him I thought the Dutch anthem was very beautiful. His face lit up and he smiled from ear to ear and thanked me for my kindness. He was very proud at that moment.

This anthem is basically William of Nassau making a love letter to his country and God. Really beautiful.

I first heard this anthem in a movie "The Hiding Place" The family in the film was gathered around a radio listening to Queen Wilhelmina saying "the lights have gone out over a free Holland" Then the anthem was played and they all stood up.

One of the best anthem. It's so unique and the lyrics are amazing. It's in William The Silent's perspective, and how he has felt loyalty to his land and his people, and even though he has been loyal to the King of Spain, but because of the persecution and rights not given to the Dutch people, he then turns against them. From the royal's favourite to an enemy. The anthem has a very emotional message and tune resonating to a deep wound or a yearning to one's fatherland, and God - in which William of Nassau wants to rely on and all he ever wanted to do.
