In my headcanon considering the fact that the War of Wrath saw the Valar and Maiar fought side by side with the free peoples of Middle Earth and the Elves of Valinor against Morgoth there is a possibility that Gandalf who at that time was at his Maia form Olorin possibly dueled Sauron only to get beaten to the pulp by Sauron thus traumatizing him for a long time until he was sent to Middle Earth later.
