For anyone wondering, that scene was actually a story/a diffrent route.

Remember the episode where subaru tried to convince rem to go leave the capital and to live together? The author made a side story about, what happend if they did leave together. Its called "Re:Zero if Sloth". In that route they hide and live together in a small area and had a children of their own. Although it was a happy ending for many. But it's kinda fucked up how Subaru chose to run from the scene causing the roswall mansion to fall apart and many to die, including emillia and ram.

This is a scene from the story of Natsuki Rem when Subaru escaped with Rem in the 18th episode of Rezero's 1st term. There is actually a novel about this story in Japan.

The Rem: If / SLOTH is canon to the story. You should read it, its amazing. I don’t wanna spoil much and dives deeper into the witches cult. It’s extremely important to the future arc’s coming up in the anime. And it’ll give you insight to what the Cult is doing and what they have done. This story will probably become a OVA after season 3 or 4. I’m glad they showed glimpses to what Subaru and Rem could’ve had.

Hmm ever wonder if the what if side story would be canon. It's being saved for the future, like one of their children went to the past to correct the messed up timeline. Something in the future went horrifically bad that destroyed everything.

They should definitely make the Sloth IF story an OVA. That one above all others. It has the most depth, is the longest and tells the best story. It would be perfect.

The fact he ate those memories implies that Subaru actually went through with the Sloth Route, but because his goal wasn't completed and no progress towards it was made his save point never updated; so when he eventually died, either from being killed or from old age he went back to that fruit stand with Rem and went through with True route, which just makes it even more depressing to think about
