I came here for an answer as my kids want to know and I realized I dont know. I grew up on Long Island NY, but now live in Ohio. In NY, we have the town of Hempstead. Population? 768, 103 as of 2018. Town of Babylon? 210, 363 as of 2018. Videos say a town has farms and cities have skyscrapers and giant buildings. But there's no farms in Babylon and Hempstead. There is little space for anything like that. But in the City of Sharonville in Ohio, 14, 659 as of 2020 or the City of Mason in Ohio, 33, 592 as of 2020, there are farms and not much on tall buildings over 5 stories and those are usually hotels on the interstate.

So what really is the difference? It doesn't seem to be anything real, just a desire to call it one or the other.
