Bugs the heck out of me when I'm doing 30mph on my 125cc motorcycle, the speed limit is 30mph and some fuckwit in their car is right up behind me trying to get me to go faster.
Yes, I drive in the middle of my lane on 30mph roads as at the side are the drains. (The middle of the lane isn't much better as the local roads are looking more like a patchwork quilt these days - patches upon patches upon patches.)

I think this is for reason - if they catch You (10%+2MPH), so doing 35+MPH at 30MPH speed limit, You cannot blame tollerance of measuring device...

This was confirmed to me by the trainer on my motorway awareness course.

My speedometer shows a higher speed than my GPS Navigation, which matches roadside speed indicators perfectly. The disparity is greater at the moment because I'm using winter tyres.

you have to remember that your tyre changes size over its life time, it will lose around 9mm from its diameter making the tyre smaller, this must make some impact on the speed readings

I’ve not come across the + 2 part. But my understanding is that for MOT purposes your speedometer can be 10% off, so that in practice you aren’t presented with a speeding ticket if you’re caught doing less than 10% above the speed limit by a camera. However if when asked you admit to 31 mph in a 30 mph zone you can be prosecuted

I think the tolerances are to compensate for any error, especially in hand held devices.

It does work, , , , If you bribe the officer 10% of his wages + 2 donuts, you can get away with it...

I do road safety volunteering with Kent Police, we are told 10 percent plus 2, but this is just our guide for volunteering. I didn't realise that some Police Forces have different criteria. I would like to see your List as it again, as it wasn't very clear as disappeared very quickly.

This actually comes down to VOSA. In their rules for an IVA they state that a vehicles speed readout must be no lower or higher than 10% of the true speed. So in a 70 zone you could be doing 63 or 77. If you are within 10% argue that you were doing the indicated speed limit and that this complies with VOSA regulations.

I do believe both sides of a road have a be marked with speed limit signage, otherwise you could argue that you didn't see the sign. E.g. a large vehicle could obstruct direct sight. But stick to speed limits you can't go wrong.

The tolerance for speedometer in vehicles is 10%, which is why you see the speed limit plus 10%. The extra is discretionary bug the allowance of 10% avoids arguments that your vehicle was indicating the speed limit and you are being prosecuted 1 or 2 miles per hour over.

My understanding was that the +10% was based on the requirement that vehicle speedometers are (or at least were, 20 years ago) required to be accurate only to +/- 10%, so the police had to give you the benefit of the doubt...

That might have changed in the meantime.

Having worked in new car sales, uk speedos at 30mph are actually set to 27mph I'm guessing too keep us under the the speed limit to reduce injury to be smart and use GPS ( Google maps) and find your true speed. My father picked up an SP30 for doing 34mph while traveling at 31mph. 10%+2 is from the 80's/90's. Nearly 30yrs out of date.

I love my old motorcycle, but the speedo gives more of a rough concept than accurate details. I think it's set a little high so I'm usually alright, but occasionally it does bounce around the dial a bit in what I call the "-ish zone" :D

Hi, this is probably based from a time when the legal limits for speedometer accuracy was + or - 10% at 30 mph, vehicles from these times are now much older, some of which are now classified as historic vehicles and the accuracy of original speedos may be questionable?.

I've always used a straight 10%, not 10% plus 2 and never been done by a speed camera or police. Unsure of legality but it seems to work. Plus speedo reads slightly high anyway.

I think it's fairly common knowledge that speedos show a higher speed than the vehicle is travelling, for obvious reasons.
However, when I use Google maps the speed it indicates is always substantially higher than the speed my speedo is indicating. Is the app measuring the speed correctly?
