FreeBSD 2for1: Basic XFCE & Openbox install

preview_player
Показать описание
Following a couple of user requests on how to install XFCE and Openbox, here is a two for one, on a fresh FreeBSD install....
Note: I didn't set up any graphics drivers for Nvidia or AMD etc, I'll assume you'll do that later...this is a stock install, and a basic config.
Commands used:
pkg update
pkg install xorg
pkg install xfce
pkg install xfce4-goodies
pkg install dbus

dbus_enable="YES"
slim_enable-"YES"

edit .xinitrc
exec xfce4-session

pkg install openbox
pkg install obconf
pkg install kickshaw

Please note:
The .xinitrc file is always located in the users home directory...
and to start XFCE, you can use:
exec startxfce
exec xfce4-session
or
startxfce4 --with-ck-launch

I always use exec startxfce but as they say, YMMV 🙂

I love it when slim gets switched off midway through a presentation.

It’s like enjoying an ice-cream from the Lyons Maid lady; the intermission separating Ben Hur is my favourite memory.

And most importantly, my wife thinks that I’m a nerd because I can type startx without looking.

And we lost the opportunity to see what top would say both in xfce4 and openbox. :)
Thanks for another great video.

I'll never forget the first time I installed openbox. three minutes staring at a grey screen waiting for it to load after the login. and it was already loaded 😆

Fantastic! I'm on NomadBSD, that use openbox by default. Also on Linux Mint 20.3 and on LMDE 5 i installed openbox that is my favourite window manager. Furthermore i installed Endeavour Openbox Community edition. So thanks a lot for this video.

Great contribution. Thanks for sharing. I'm planning to migrate from Arch Linux (Arcolinux distro) to BSD. I love XFCE!

Very nice!!! I love openbox, I just hate setting it up to be usable it takes forever to make it functional and look good and I'm impatient LOL. That is why I choose XFCE 90% of the time if it is an option because it runs well on everything. Cheers!!!

Ive started making my own list of what to type/install on google keep, is there a list of what you have typed in on a website somwhere? or Discord channel that you could create to help us all Freebsd fans chat more freely on as it were?

Sir, I followed this guide to install freeBSD on a virtual machine and it installed successfully. But when it is installed directly on the hard disk it doesn't work, the slim login manager display doesn't appear. What's the solution?

Hmmm. Getting an .Xauthority error. Slim won't execute login command. Can't get xfce or openbox to start. The startx command from the command prompt starts xterm. This is a fresh install of FBSD13.1-RELEASE (nothing else on it) on an older Toshiba laptop. Graphics and wifi are supported. I noticed you did the pkg install under root on /, but then switched to your user under /usr/local when you created the .xintirc file. I didn't see that mentioned in your video and I don't see anything about that in the FBSD documentation for the xfce install. Was there a reason for that? I have tried that as well, with no change in the above.

I dont like slim. xfce4-goodies is nice

Slim allows you to choose GUI. Requires to have "exec $1" in your .xinitrc. F1 to select.

it's been a while now using XFCE, my .xinitrc just exec /usr/local/bin/startxfce4 and for slim like xdm ways add line on /etc/ttys ttyv8 "/usr/local/bin/slim" xterm on insecure, Great video btw :-)
