Do NOT Pause During Your Serve’s Trophy Position (Pro Tennis Technique Explained)
1. Toss lower to force continuous motion and give you more time to hit

Love the incorporation of physics into the explanations, makes it a lot easier to understand the rationale!

I used this advice of low toss about a month ago on my 10 year old son (you have mentioned it in a previous video) and his serve improved over 1 single training. He used to stop in the middle of the toss and wait which destroyed his racket head speed and coordination of his movement. Also his toss is now more consistent.

I cant agree more on this... I tried this during my games and it really worked when i toss the ball low... with power.

This is a great point Ryan. Back in the 70s, Roscoe Tanner had a huge serve and he tossed super low.
I can see why people have high tosses though...it gives them time to centralize their focus on the ball a little longer...but I do agree with you.
Cheers,

Great video Ryan! I was having a chat the other day with a respected coach who said that whilst a lot of the coaches on tour are very good with tactics, training and routines, a lot of them aren't good technically. Ivan Lendl case in point as he's admitted himself.

Also Cam Norrie could have a much faster serve if he had a lower toss and got rid of his pause and got the timing right.

But I guess tinkering with your serve as a pro is risky because its finding the time to make a change and then implementing in match play without destroying your form.

Great video as always Ryan.

Agreed that Sabalenka has a toss problem and Nick has a great serve. Not ready to say a low toss is a serve fundamental though. It's one technique that can work.. Watching Skinner match now and he has netted a ton of first serves. I keep thinking it's because his toss is too low. Steffi Graf, Ivan Lendl and many others had high tosses and did OK.

Hey Ryan, absolutely technical explanation .... But even Federer takes a slight pause during the trophy position (even though his toss is aptly at 0.85seconds), so how is he able to time his serve so so well even with that slightly pause??
[To the extent that he is one of the finest servers of the sport]

Wow!!!! My coach was trying to get me to toss low but I didn't want that
After this I'm convinced
Goodbye high tosses

When the player have a higher toss, isn't it because he/she is trying to use some of the potential energy into the serve, such as using that energy to apply more spin?

Does tossing high/low depends on height of person? Nick height is 6.7?

Did you hear, after her win today, Sabalenka thanked a coach for "fixing" her serve. Added more spin and hit to bigger targets, she claimed. Imagine if she also lowered her toss! 😉

Ryan, thank you so much for all your great videos which helped a lot improving my game. Watching Kyrgios serve in your video, I noticed that he is not tucking his left arm in (not crossing the arms at the end of the serve) as you had recommended to do in an earlier video. Instead he is swinging his left arm to the left and behind his body. One time, my coach recommended me to do exactly that, to increase the speed of the swing. I tried it, and it felt awkward, so I was happy when you recommended to do it the way that I was used to serve. Do you have an idea why Kyrgios is doing it differently? Does it have to do with the low toss?

I’m guessing players with big tosses have tried to lower the toss but due to timing issues the players are unable to apply it into match play without risking a large drop in serve consistency.
