My grandfather had me cap my hand over the end of the hose, and then blew a bunch of breath into it, covering it with his hand. Place one end in the water, one end where you want it to go. Cleared the swamped yard (20-30sqyrds 2 inch of water) in an afternoon. Thought gpop was a godamn wizard until he explained it to me.

I figured out (by accident) years ago that if the weight of your water is more at the exit than the weight of the water being “sucked upward, ” you can siphon water uphill.

My wife uses this technique on my checking account.

I wonder if you could make this type of siphon work with a homemade solar pool heater which is just 100 ft of black coiled hose. I wonder if I would be able to draw it from the pool have it go up a little and then output back into the pool at the same water level? If it would work there would be no need for a pump you can just start the siphon action and let it go as long as it would

Your not telling me you have worked out the scientific theory of gravity verses capillary action, ,

Another term for capillary is absortion,

The test is to use capillary and gravity in an = measure finding some formula between the two to achieve a certain night without loosing compression of gravity feed,

You could go up in hose size to obtain the mathematical equasion.

But working on a volume lets say of flow 500GPH trying to reach an outflow of say 1000GPH etc
Water will always find the easy root and always flows down stream,

You can use a valve, system to stop water tracking back etc,
Let me know how you go this is an interesting topic,

your calculations could create new syphone products,

Ram Pumps loose water so not ecological but fantastic to get water up hill

But i like you just want to get to a final point gravity verses volume.

Nice one.

did you fill the bin with water before putting the hoses in?

this is the way i was thinking about doing from my stream in the mountains except a check valve on the supply side and a shut off valve on the output side and a filler tank filled on the supply side. fill the tank and cap it. open drain side and it should pull a siphon.

It's unclear whether the outlet is actually at a higher elevation..

A few weeks ago I had a conversation about siphoning water to a higher destination and actually drew a diagram of exactly the same thing you're doing. Nice to see the proof from the theory. Good job!

Just wanted to point out, if there was any way to siphon water uphill, then you could siphon water uphill to fill a container uphill, and then let it run downhill through a water turbine generator to produce power, then just (magically) siphon it back up, and presto, no more energy problem, you've solved global warming, etc. Too bad no one has ever thought of that.

How did you get the hose filled with water (prior to releasing both ends)?

Thank you this will work for me. I feel so sad. For the birds who come and drink and swim . Hanging out . I'll be down this . Amen

The process your using is a split connection meaning your double syphoning,

1- syphone from the pool to your trash bin.
2 - syphone from the trash bin to your water outward.

So a double syphon process.
Nothing new.

But look it proves a, simple process point when syphoning from a river, stream, creek, or seashore, just use a pail bucket, , using the same process to sluice like a Goose.
