I followed your timing instructions in your 4 part video and successfully fixed my personal 2008 F-150 and runs like a new truck. With the confidence of fixing that, our work truck F-250 with the 5.4 had failing cam phasers and start up rattle. I fixed that saving my company lots of $$.

You are the reason I drive older fords since you have a video on every possible issue. With all of your fixes my truck is a great running vehicle and could not be happier with the 5.4.

In my area, this era of F150 is popular amongst scrap collectors and roofers.

I have this issue called Ford dealership and they laughed at me and said that it was a waste of money and timing chains never needed replacement. These are the same geniuses that say the transmission fluid never needs replacement.

This includes 4.6l 2valve as well, I know from experience. I had part of the chain guide punch a hole in the timing cover then lost oil pressure due to plastic guide bits in the oil pickup. This happened at 280k. New timing cover, chains, guides and oil pump made it to over 390k before the frame rotted out and the original trans died. Engine still ran great but tired. 2001 Expedition 2wd.

I love seeing mechanics that take pride in their work and actually care enough to do things like this! There are a lot of scumbag mechanics out there looking to take advantage of everyone, you sir have my respect!

Thanks Brian, I put on the 10, 000 miles after all your work without a problem, my 2005 F150 5.4 is running great after all the work you’ve done to it,

This is almost exactly what i saw in my 2010 expedition when i dropped the pan and removed the front cover after buying it from a private seller. Adding insult to injury, someone had previously jammed the phasers with random parts so they wouldnt move (i have pictures), and when reinstalling them had somehow managed to mistime the driver side bank, so not only was the VCT system non functional, it was also mistimed, and had a strange power curve/lack of power that i never thought was quite right, and of course learned why after tearing it apart. 3 days and a full OEM timing replacement kit later, the motor ran so much better it was unbelievable. Still got some other things to fix up, but at least the main issue is fixed now.

This must've been making one helluva racket for a while!

Yeah. My oldest son's 1st vehicle had that problem and we didn't know the pan had not been cleaned. I rebuilt it and upgraded oil pump to delay next time. I also used the cast iron tensioners with some green thread lock. In the year he drove the hell out of it was no problem. '04 excursion w/ 222k miles (2v not 3) I replaced plastic tensioners at 100k when startup sounded like poring marbles in a coffee can. If you listen you can take care of your vehicles.

I just bought a pristine 03 F250 crewcab 4x4 5.4, not knowing there was a 2 valve and 3 valve 5.4. After finding out mine was a 2 valve, I’m much happier with my purchase.

I’ve been in the car biz for 40+ years (mostly in the front end, I can tear down and build the most advanced computer, but not with a car, I freely admit, I’m NOT a technician!😂). I have to say, this is one of the best videos I’ve seen for vehicle problems, someone in grade 2 would be able to understand this! 🤪 Through, fast, informative and best of all, super visual!! Well done man, well done!!

I was able to fix that issue, thanks to your vids. Much Appreciated!

Signs of a good mechanic is not just fixing the problem but getting down into it like a detective and being able to explain it in detail like this. Simply telling a customer your timing chain needs work isn't enought to get some people to pay for the work further hurting their pocket in the future

The more i see of OHC motors, the more i love lifters and push rods.
If i had to choose an alternative,
It would be a flathead.

Doing that on one of our work trucks right now… been studying your 4 part video series. I’ve got the new pump on so far, hoping to finish the chains, phasers and tensioners tomorrow and then put all the rollers in the day after that. The truck has right at 200, 000 miles. I’m shocked at how good it looks compared to some of the ones in your videos. All the guides are intact, none of the rollers were bad and there’s no scoring on the cam or the cam caps. The tensioners only had two tiny spots of gasket blown out at the bottom of each of them.
