Whenever I’m down and then I hear Sara‘s voice on Justin‘s live streams get instantly makes me happy to hear her and her infectious laugh because it’s a reminder that they are wonderful people in this world like her and Justin. People that can treat others with kindness and compassion without being told or forced to buy a magic bearded man in the sky, threatening them with eternal punishment.

My dear Mother had the child-like faith the NT recommends. Whenever a question or doubt would come up she would say “when we get to Heaven, we’ll ask Jesus”. I’m sure she cornered him for a good while.

I was convinced that religion was a scam when I was about 4 years old. Great show 👍. In the nineteen sixties I listened to a former Catholic Priest Alan Watts lectures on the radio - They Made it All Up. And - What is Reality? And - On Being God. And - Sex in the Church. He claimed that the Priests really don't believe what they are preaching and that Heaven sounds boring.

I don’t have a deconstruction story. I was raised in a religious environment but I rejected it in my early teen years. Listening to the deconstruction stories of others, it sounds like once you give yourself permission to question even one article of your faith, the dam breaks soon after. You have to have the courage to take the first step and allow yourself to start asking critical questions. After that, it’s just a matter of time until you lose your faith.

Sometimes at certain points its probably not a good idea to take away someones beliefs because it can make Someone's mind snap. The ones thatll snap probably wont deconvert but. . There is those that do

Also, Heaven's Gates, Hells Flames is laughably bad. At least the one I saw. It was so bad I immediately ignore someones opinion if they like or find it to be good theater.

4:10 yeah this was a tough one for me to swallow as someone who dove into fundamentalist Christianity in my late 30s. Getting all this advice about how to live for God from people with unreasonably large houses, corporate jobs, and expensive cars. That stuff is all fine with me but I’d Jesus was real, I think he’d have more to say about that than me smoking cigarettes. They acted like it’s the other way around. Funny, I quit smoking after turning atheist 😂

@LeavingFaith what were your beliefs on evolution, the age of the earth, etc? Did you ever go full young-earth creationist, or did your interest in the sciences preclude that? Did your science education play any role in deconstructing?

about the science bit; i agree science and a fundamental/literal reading of all the Bible are in contradiction. but young earth creationism ( including the denial of evolution) is not a view most Christians hold to. it only excludes a particular group.

at the Born Again clip, i missed the inner-witness of the holy Spirit (Rom 8: 16) being mentioned and a radical before and after. as many would say. sounds like she was a cultural Christian who was really into it but not born again.
