The pinnacle generation of BMW. Nothing beats the E39 M5 and E46 M3

I had an 02 M5 as a daily driver for three years. It was a stunning combination of LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather. Purchased it with 69k miles in it and put 45k miles on in three years. It did everything, daily drives, long trips, autocross, and winter beater. Absolutely an engaging drive and an intoxicating soundtrack with the perfect blend of luxury and sport.

Being a young guy into autocross, I eventually turned to it's stablemate, the e36 M3. I love that even more as the inline 6 begs to be revved and it is still driveable in all situations. BMW was at the peak of their game in the 90s and early 00s.

The E39 is still to this day regarded as the best saloon ever made! Even without the M5 variant, they are fantastic motors.

Fantastic. This really encapsulates why the E39 M5 appeals to us 30-somethings as much as it did to those who could afford it in-period.

I have a white e39 M5. I agree new M cars are fast, just not the same. I just drove a new M4 at BMW driving school. If someone wanted to swap that M4 for my car I'd respectfully decline. This car will stay with me forever.

i bought my E39 M5 5 years ago when i was 23 i felt in love with that car when i was playing Need For Speed High Stakes and Hot Pursuit 2 as a kid. Growing up with my dad owning an E30 325i and an E36 323i i had always the wish for going for a BMW. At the right time when i was in the position to buy one i pulled the trigger and got myself a 99` in Antrazit Grau. Luckily living in Germany i am able to have a blast with it on the Autobahn hitting top speed on unrestricted sections and i even took it on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. At that time it was my first BMW overkill for someone who has never driven a still high horsepower rwd car but it was always my childhood dream to own one and probably the only car i am never going to sell.

I was working at the dealership when these were introduced. They would have me take out prospective customer and "show them what it will do." Having Carte Blanche like that was wonderful so the first thing I would do would be to turn off the traction control. Yeehaaa! As these cars aged there were a ton of issues with clutch and vanos problems so many were sold needing help instead of getting fixed. Plus, people ran the crap out of them. They have the usual E39 problems like busted plastic seat surrounds and pixelated dash displays plus I always preferred the ones without nav display as they don't look so dated now. I sold my last BMW (93 M5) last year after 31 years of having one in the driveway. Just don't care for the new offerings and BMW has made it very expensive to maintain a "classic." The E39 M5 is a great car if it's been maintained properly and now is old enough that most of the early problems have already been addressed at some point.

Yeah, because e39 M5s totally aren’t becoming unattainable.
